Music
to our collective ears
You
ever notice that people buy CDs of bands who have one
catchy song and then find out that the record is full
of crap? (I'm looking at you, Baha Men) Anyways, we
here at Renegade Monkey Nuns have a wide range of
music tastes and think that most of these band's songs
are not crappy. That's a good thing. I
find it odd though, that I (Disco
Stu) am the only person who doesn't have Green Day
and blink-182 on their list... And why does no
one have classic disco music on their lists? Why??

NOFX
One
of the few bands to tell MTV to essentially fuck off,
they combine sarcastic lyrics with some quality punk
music. Plus, their guitarist is called El Hefe.
What's not to love?

Screeching Weasel
Many
critics have called this band the link between
original Ramones punk and the pop-punk of
blink-182. Singer Ben Weasels lyrics range from
girl trouble to destroying everything he's been
taught. Sadly, this band broke up in July of
2001, but hopefully he will make a comeback. (They've
previously broken up twice)

blink-182
Okay,
okay, they totally suck live and their jokes get stale
after a while. But, back in the day, they made
some quality music about being losers, having no
friends, and getting zero girls. Kinda like me.

The Offspring
This
little band from Orange County turned into the biggest
selling band ever on an independent label. Their
sarcastic yet thought-provoking lyrics combine with
thrashing Bad Religion-esque guitar riffs. A good
listen for any punk fan.

Green Day
There's
so much to say about why Green Day kicks ass.
Their music is always great, from the teenage angst
hooks on albums like "Kerplunk" and "Dookie"
to the more mature sounds of "nimrod." and
"Warning". They're not afraid to do
what they want, nor make fools of themselves and
destroy things at the same time. Finally, if
you've seen them live, then you know the true power
Green Day harnesses. Simply amazing.

U2
They’ve
been making quality albums since the 1980’s, a dark
time for music (well at least in my opinion). Their
last album, All That You Can’t Leave Behind, was a
smash hit and proves that they are still at the top of
their game.

The Wallflowers
They
are about as popular nowadays as LFO is, but they
still have made good music. Their song “One
Headlight” was the first song I truly liked and
that’s what got me into listening to music. Now if
only they had the same star power as some of the other
Rock bands.

Third Eye Blind
They
have a catchy sound along with powerful lyrics. The
band has a song on both suicide and rape. One of their
better songs is actually an instrumental piece called
“Slow Motion.”
Favorite
Song: “Never Let You Go”

Green Day
They
may not be punk rockers anymore, but hey, they make
great music. What is better about them is that it’s
all about the music and the fans. I think that besides
the music, their greatest achievement was throwing mud
at the crazy people at Woodstock. That was so funny!

They
simply amaze you with their ability to make what I
call “fun music.” They make me laugh every time I
hear “Blew Job.” All teenagers can relate to their
music somehow, which makes them even more popular.
What is more stunning is that they make just as good
serious songs as they do fun songs. “Stay Together
For the Kids” and “Adam’s Song” are both very
powerful.

I'm
getting into them now since they provide the best
pick-up lines: "You make me come..." and
"Can you forget about the things I said when I
was drunk? I
didn't mean to call you that."

The
whole dancing-around-in-underwear thing made me more
confident to walk around my house in my boxers. And sing and dance too.
Though I usually don't have a capacity crowd
audience for that... I limit it to a couple hundred.

Linkin Park
I
admit that the first time I listened to "Hybrid
Theory," I thought every song was exactly the
same as the other.
I also thought they were all good.
Paranoia pops up in every song... it's
everywhere... LOOK!
Behind you!
Oh... just the leprechauns.

Green Day
I
never even knew why it was called "Good Riddance
(Time of your Life)," but then fellow RMN staff
writer Randall Graves explained it to me.
It was the most amazingly thoughtful and
interesting explanation of a song I've ever heard!
... Yep.

They
just have a great time at concerts, make some great
videos, and can even pull some serious stuff together
if they want. Example:
"Fuck a Dog," containing such classic lyrics
as "I tried to fuck your mom in the ass, tried to
fuck your dad in the ass, could only find the dog…
and his ass."

Coldplay/ Travis
I
love British Pop. (You'll notice that none of the
bands on my top 5 are American) Coldplay and
Travis epitomize the sound of British Pop: mellow,
acoustic, and lyrical. Both deserve a larger
audience here in the states. Plus, you gotta
love a band who does a rock version of Britney Spears'
"... Baby, One More Time" (Travis).

Oasis
Okay,
so the Gallagher brothers--lead-singer, Liam, and head
songwriter, Noel--are absolutely obnoxious. In
fact, in a recent poll in the UK, Noel was chosen as
the third most hated person in the country. (He landed
behind Adolf Hitler and Slobodan Milosovic)
Nevertheless, they make good music. The Sex
Pistols + The Beatles = Oasis.

U2
The
only non-British band on my list. (They're
Irish) They're one of the only bands who can
consistently make good music for years and
years. They're not afraid to experiment with new
sounds and the trademark hooks to their classic songs
are always great. And, the guitarist's name is
The Edge. That's just plain cool.

Radiohead
They
made a big splash during the hey-day of
Alternative/Grunge music with the release of
"Creep". For a while, it was their
only hit in America and they eventually grew to
despise it. Since then, they've proved
themselves as a great band during a bad time for great
bands. Lead singer Thom Yorke's lyrics can be
depressing, but they're always thoughtful. The
band is in the stage of experimenting with new music
and have gotten a bit weird, but that can't take away
from they're overall talent.

The Beatles
Simply
the most influential band ever. Yes, more
influential than Presley, Sinatra, and the
Rollingstones. If they had never appeared, I
dread to think what music would be like today.
They took more risks than any band of their time and
their sound remains timeless. Best.
Band. Ever.
