Other Movies to Look Forward to This Summer

Can I see some ID, please?

Though these movies may not be as anticipated as those that made the top 10 list, they still deserve to be looked at. There are tons of promising movies coming out this summer. Here's a thorough list and description of the most promising ones.

 

The New GuyThe New Guy

Director: Ed Decter

Starring: DJ Qualls, Eddie Griffin, Eliza Dushku, Zooey Deschanel, Lyle Lovett

Nerdy high school senior Dizzy Harrison has finally gotten lucky. Locked in the pen for an array of misdeeds at his old school, Dizzy learns the art of intimidation and other fine points of 'prison cool' from fellow inmate Luther. This mismatched duo joins forces, ultimately transforming geeky dud Dizzy into the hip, studly "Gil Harris." Transferred to a new school after his release, "Gil" destroys the popularity-obsessed social system, boosts school morale and wins the heart of Danielle, the gorgeous girl-next-door. Life as the new guy is great-or is it?

Unfaithful

Starring: Richard Gere, Diane Lane, Olivier Martinez, Chad Lowe, Dominic Chianese

From the director of "Fatal Attraction" comes an erotic thriller about the body language of guilt, centering on a couple living in the New York City suburbs whose marriage goes dangerously awry when the wife indulges in an adulterous fling.

The Importance of Being Earnest

Director: Oliver Parker

Starring: Rupert Everett, Reese Witherspoon, Colin Firth, Judi Dench, Frances O'Connor

Two young gents living in 1890’s England have taken to bending the truth in order to put some excitement into their lives. Worthing (Firth) has invented a brother, Earnest, whom he uses as an excuse to leave his dull country life behind to visit the ravishing Gwendolyn (O’Connor). Montcrieff (Everett) decides to take the name “Earnest” when visiting Worthing’s young and beautiful ward, Cecily (Witherspoon) at the country manor. Things start to go awry when they end up together in the country and their deceptions are discovered - threatening to spoil their romantic pursuits.

Starring: Jeremy Davies, Angela Lindvall, Elodie Bouchez, Gerard Depardieu, Massimo Ginni

Paris, 1969: The filming of a sci-fi movie set in the distant year 2000 is in trouble. The director's obsession with the actress who plays sexy secret agent Dragonfly has clouded his judgment and the film has no ending. A young American in Paris to document his life on film "with total honesty" is brought in to finish the movie. THis prives to be difficult when the line between his fantasy life and reality becomes blurred and he, too, finds himself seduced by the charms of Dragonfly.

Starring: Jennifer Lopez, Billy Campbell, Juliette Lewis, Ruben Madera 

A woman thinks she's found the man of her dreams, but after the wedding he quickly becomes abusive. After she tries and fails to get away from him, she decides that her only option is murder.

Release Date: May 24

 

Insomnia

Director: Christopher Nolan

Starring: Al Pacino, Hillary Swank, Robin Williams, Martin Donovan, Nicky Katt

A sleep-deprived detective tries to track down the murderer of a teenage girl, but in the course of the investigation accidentally shoots and kills his own partner. The killer then blackmails him to frame someone innocent for the murder.

Release Date: May 24

 

Undercover BrotherUndercover Brother

Director: Malcolm D. Lee

Starring: Eddie Griffin, Aunjanue Ellis, Dave Chappelle, Denise Richards, Chris Kattan

He's back. He's bad. And he's here to rescue us all from The Man. Blasted from the past and ready to take care of business, Undercover Brother is recruited to infiltrate a sinister underground movement headed by The Man. Partnered with the stunning Sistah Girl, our hero must first undergo the ultimate attitude adjustment and trade in his 'fro and platforms for tennis sweaters and penny loafers. Once the transformation is complete, he's ready to take on the evil perpetrators of Operation Whitewash - Mr. Feather, Penelope Snow AKA White She Devil and ultimately, The Man. Get ready for action in the affirmative. Ya dig?

Bad Company

Starring: Chris Rock, Anthony Hopkins, Gabriel Macht, John Slattery, Peter Stormare

CIA operative Kevin Pope is suave, brilliant, and right on the verge of completing a top-secret mission to keep a rogue nuclear weapon off the black market when he is suddenly killed. With the clock ticking and no other options available, the CIA reluctantly enlists Kevin's long-lost identical twin brother, Jake, to take his place. But since Jake is the mirror opposite of Kevin, a working-class Joe, it's up to veteran CIA agent Gaylord Oakes to train him within 9 days before having to negotiate a sensitive nuclear weapons deal with terrorists.

Set against dramatic European backdrops, The Bourne Identity is the story of a man salvaged, near death, from the ocean by the crew of an Italian fishing boat. When he recuperates, the man suffers from total amnesia. He is completely without identity or background, but possesses a range of extraordinary talents in fighting, linguistic skills and self-defense that speak of a dangerous past. He sets out on a desperate search—assisted by the initially rebellious Marie to discover who he really is, and why he is being pursued by assassins.

Lilo and StitchLilo and Stitch

Director: Chris Sanders, Dean DeBlois

Starring: Daveigh Chase, Chris Sanders, Jason Scott Lee, Kevin McDonald, Ving Rhames

Walt Disney Pictures’ new animated comedy, “Lilo and Stitch,” tells a tale of a young girl’s close encounter with the galaxy’s most wanted extraterrestrial. Lilo is a lonely Hawaiian girl who adopts a small ugly ‘dog,’ whom she names Stitch. Stitch would be the perfect pet if he weren’t in reality a genetic experiment who has escaped from an alien planet and crash-landed on Earth. Through her love, faith and unwavering belief in “ohana” (the Hawaiian concept of family), Lilo helps unlock Stitch’s heart and gives him the one thing he was never designed to have – the ability to care for someone else.

Eight Legged Freaks

Director: Ellory Elkayem

Starring: David Arquette, Kari Wuhrer, Scarlett Johansson, Matt Czuchry, Doug E. Doug

The residents of a rural mining town discover that an unfortunate chemical spill has caused hundreds of little spiders to mutate overnight to the size of SUVs. It's up to mining engineer Chris McCormack and Sheriff Sam Parker to mobilize an eclectic group of townspeople into battle against the bloodthirsty eight-legged beasts. With state-of-the-art visual effects, Eight Legged Freaks updates such inspired genre classics as Them and Black Scorpion into a terrifyingly fun experience.

Reign of Fire

Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Christian Bale, Izabella Scorupco, Gerard Butler

In present-day London, twelve-year-old Quinn watches as his mother, a contruction engineer, inadvertently wakes an enormous fire-breathing beast from its centuries-long slumber. Twenty years later, much of the world has been scarred by the beast and its offspring. As a fire chief, Quinn (Christian Bale) is responsible for warding off the beasts and keeping a small community alive as they eke out a meager existence. Into their midst comes a hotshot American, Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey), who says he has a way to kill the beasts and save mankind - a way Quinn's never seen done. Directed by Rob Bowman ("The X Files"), "Reign of Fire" fuses a medieval past with a post-apocalyptic future in this exciting tale of adventure and survival.

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood

A Southern tale of life, love and family follows a group of lifelong friends as they stage a rather unorthodox intervention to help a young playwright unravel the truth about her eccentric mother, find forgiveness and come to terms with her painful past.

Stuart Little 2

Director: Ron Minkoff

Starring: Geena Davis, High Laurie, Michael J. Fox, Jonathan Lipnicki, Nathan Lane, Steve Zahn

Plucky, pint-sized hero Stuart Little returns in Stuart Little 2, delighting audiences with even more action-packed adventure. This time, Stuart must go on a journey through New York City with a reluctant Snowbell to rescue a new friend, Margalo, from a villainous Falcon.

The Country Bears

Director: Peter Hastings

Starring: Haley Joel Osment, Christopher Walken, Diedrich Bader, Julienne Buescher, Charles S. Dutton

Like other celebrated rock-and-roll groups, the members of the legendary group The Country Bears were torn apart by the perils of their own success: ego, jealousy, and a little too much honey. The Country Bears - brothers Ted and Fred Bedderhead, Tennessee O'Neal and Zeb Zoober - are back together to film their first major motion picture. "The Country Bears" is the story of how eager young fan Beary Barrington can convince the bitter ex-members of the rock band to put aside their differences and perform a benefit concert to save Country Bear Hall, the legendary venue where the and got its start. Featuring musical performances or appearances by real-life rock-and-roll legends Don Henley, John Hiatt, Elton John, Queen Latifah, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt and Brian Setzer, audiences will want to bring the cubs to the biggest rock `n roll reunion in history.

Signs

Director: M. Nigh Shyamalan

Starring: Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Cherry Jones, Rory Culkin, Abigail Breslin

Writer/Director M. Night Shyamalan follows up "The Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable" with his new feature film, "Signs," a thriller set in Bucks County, Pennsylvania focusing on the mysterious appearance of a five-hundred-foot design of circles and lines carved into a family's crops. Mel Gibson stars as Graham Hess, the family patriarch, who is tested in his journey to find the truth behind the unfolding mystery. Joaquin Phoenix is Merrill Hess, brother to Graham and a former minor league baseball star.

Release Date: August 2

 

Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams

Starring: Antonio Banderas, Carla Gugino, Alexa Vega, Daryl Sabara, Cheech Marin

When the world is in trouble they call in their top secret agents. Carmen and Juni Cortez are back for another adventure in Spy Kids 2. Their newest mission takes them to a mysterious island where they meet a wildly inventive genetic scientist and his imaginative creatures, while fighting the forces of rival SPY kids, Gary and Gerti Giggles, as they head right into a trap that will test each and every Cortez spy, from super spies Mom and Dad to their SPY grandparents.

Master of DisguiseMaster of Disguise

Starring: Dana Carvey, James Brolin, Brent Spiner, Jennifer Esposito

Pistachio Disguisey, a sweet-natured Italian waiter at his father Fabbrizio's restaurant, can't figure out why he compulsively mimics his customers and desires to change his appearance. What he doesn't know yet is that these traits are part of the Disguisey family secret legacy. Fabbrizio has never told his son that he comes from a long line of masters of disguise able to mask themselves as almost anyone or anything by harnessing the great power of "Energico." Such a talent makes Fabbrizio the kidnapping target of his former arch-enemy Devlin Bowman, a criminal mastermind with a plot to steal the world's most precious treasures.

The Adventures of Pluto Nash

Starring: Eddie Murphy, Rosario Dawson, Randy Quaid, Jay Mohr, Joe Pantoliano 

Set on the moon in the year 2087, where audacious nightclub owner Pluto Nash finds himself in hot water when he refuses to sell his club to the local mob. The lunar gangsters are helping the mysterious Rex Crater mastermind a plan to take over the moon. Joining Pluto in the danger and lunacy are Dina Lake, a beautiful earthling who has traveled to the moon to further her singing ambitions, and Pluto's bodyguard Bruno-a robot quickly approaching obsolescence.

8 Mile

Starring: Eminem, Kim Basinger, Brittany Murphy, Mekhi Phifer, Eugene Byrd

The people of Detroit know 8 Mile as the city limit, a border, a boundary. It is also a psychological dividing line that separates Jimmy Smith Jr. from where and who he wants to be. 8 Mile is a provocative fictional examination of a critical week in Jimmy's life.
