Natalie Portman

Date of birth:
June 9, 1981

Hometown:
Born in Jerusalem, but raised in Long Island

Where you’ve seen her:
As an assassin in training in Luc Besson's The Professional, as the precocious Marty in Beautiful Girls, and many other critically acclaimed films. On May 16, you can see Natalie reprise her role as Padme Amidala in the new Star Wars movie, Episode 2 - Attack of the Clones.

She's a smarty-pants:
Natalie can speak Hebrew, French, and Japanese fluently. She's also currently a junior at Harvard University. Oh, yeah: she's been a vegetarian since she was 8 years old.

I like pizza:
Natalie was first discovered at a pizza parlor by a talent agent. The rest is history, as they say.

Rejected:
Natalie is notorious for turning down scripts she doesn't want to do. She turned down the part of Juliet in Romeo and Juliet because of the age difference between her and Leo DiCaprio. She turned down a part in The Ice Storm because she felt the subject matter was too dark; Christina Ricci got the role and noted that she often gets roles Portman turns down. She also famously turned down the lead role in Lolita because she thought the subject was despicable. Natalie also turned down The Horse Whisperer to star in the Broadway play, The Diary of Anne Frank. And she nearly turned down a role in Anywhere But Here, because it required a scene where she would be topless. Susan Sarandon refused to do the film without her, so the scene was re-written. She has also said that she will never do a horror film or a "Jennifer Love Hewitt type" film.

So what's her real name?:
Portman is her grandmother's maiden name. She uses it to protect her family.
