People of the Year
By Disco Stu - Editor in Chief : Issue 5, Vol. II

Breakthrough of the Year
Tiger Woods

When James Cameron first announced his foray into television with the post-apocalyptic Dark Angel series, critics were a bit skeptical. FOX was to air it the same day as the WB's juggernaut drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer and spin-off Angel--very tough competition. Later on, however, he announced that a relatively new face (though she's appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows), Jessica Alba was going to be the title character. Obviously, her announcement sent a simultaneous "Schwing!" in the male, TV-watching population.

Not surprisingly, TV pundits everywhere were telling Buffy to "move over." Personally, I'd like to see a cat fight be Alba and Gellar, complete with clothes you can fit in your wallet and a whole supply of baby oil. But, enough of my adolescent fantasies; Dark Angel is a good show. Great, even.

Like Buffy, Dark Angel revolves around an independent female character, supported by an eclectic ensemble cast. Also, DA follows the Buffy formula in that Alba gets into different sorts of missions through a mysterious male mentor. The similarities, however, seemingly end there.

Alba acts more like an independent detective; her friends don't know about her murky past and, likewise, DA doesn't act like a live action Scooby Doo episode (not that there's anything wrong with that).

The bottom line is that it's Alba's time to shine. Look for her to get offered more and more film roles, make more talk show appearances, and make lots more episodes of Dark Angel.

2. Kate Hudson
This Almost Famous star received both critical acclaim and several award nominations for her performance as a love struck band groupie. Look for her to star in more big movies in the future.

3. Radiohead
The British band made the weirdest album of the year in Kid A, but it was weird in a good way. These guys are finally getting the attention they deserve.
