The
Biggest Newsmakers of Y2K

Well,
the year's almost over and people everywhere are
making lists. Those lists are made up of, for
example, the best movies of the year, the best TV
shows or CDs, perhaps the best toys to give to
kids or maybe the biggest sports moments of the
year. Clearly, however, there are certain things
that take over and dominate the pages of
newspapers, magazines, or web sites. Their names
are on everyone's lips for most of the year and
carry over, even, to the next year. These are the
things that make Renegade Monkey Nuns' list for
the Top Ten Biggest Newsmakers for the Year 2000.
There's no
specific criteria for deciding something like
this. And this isn't definitive at all (well,
maybe the last five or so are). Specifically, the
list doesn't deal with political news stories
like the Elian Gonzalez deal or the Florida
recount; rather, it focuses on the entertainers,
events, and materials which made the year 2000
what it was.
While you go
through the list, you'll notice that some people
or events you think should have made the list
failed to crack the Top Ten. Well, don't fret,
because below are some of the biggest newsmakers
of the year, yet didn't make the Top Ten, and the
reasons they're not on the list.
Madonna
and The Beatles: Madonna had a busy year:
she had a baby, released an album, made a movie,
and got married. The Beatles, meanwhile, released
a whole slew of merchandise (The Beatles
Anthology, 1, etc.) that kept them in the
spotlight for most of the year. Plus, it was the
20th anniversary of John Lennon's death. They
didn't make the list mainly because they've been
making news for years and years with consistency.
This was just like a normal year for them,
multiplied by 1.5.
The
Olympics and the Subway Series: The
Olympics was a yawn fest, with only a minor
controversy involving drugs. The Subway Series
was ten times more exciting, but affected a
relatively small portion of America.
John
Rocker: Frankly, I don't think he
deserves to be on the list. Why? Because I don't
like him.
There are others
that deserve to be noted, but, I think it's time
to get on with the list.
