6: NSYNC

In late 1999, *NSync said goodbye to their original label and mentor Lou Pearlman by joining Jive records. With the addition of *NSync, Jive monopolized the teen pop market (the label also handles business for the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears). In January, the boys began 2000 by releasing "Bye, Bye, Bye", a single from their new album No Strings Attached; obviously the names had connotations beyond first glance. They followed the release with brief stops on MTV's TRL and ABC's Good Morning America, all in preparation for the album's March 21 release. In February, they stopped by the Grammy's as they were nominated twice for their collaborations with Alabama ("God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You") and Gloria Estefan ("Music of My Heart"); they didn't take home any awards, but they sat back as "Bye, Bye, Bye" climbed the Billboard charts and was put on radio playlists.

The video of the song featured all five *NSync members as marionettes puppeteered by the lovely Kim Smith. Justin Timberlake says that the video hoped to counteract all the negative views towards guys everywhere, spurred by TLC's "No Scrubs" and Destiny's Child's "Bills, Bills, Bills".

As No Strings Attached was released, it subsequently sold a whopping 2.4 million copies in its first week, setting opening sales records. The other big boy band, the Backstreet Boys, also opened at number one, but sold about 1 million copies less than *NSync. They also received the three awards including Viewer's Choice Award at the MTV VMAs.
