10: Dennis Miller

This should probably catch a few people by surprise. Somehow, Dennis Miller, who made himself famous for his long stint as the anchor for SNL's Weekend Update segment and later went on to host his own show, became the new color commentator for Monday night's most popular show by far, Monday Night Football. His hiring came a few months after Frank Gifford, Dan Dierdorf, and Boomer Esiason were essentially told to leave. The show had been lagging in the ratings (by their standards, anyway) and producers felt a need to spice up the program.

And Dennis Miller was the answer to their prayers. The announcement of his hiring sent positive as well as negative buzz throughout the sports and entertainment industry. Some said a comedian in the announcer's booth brings a spectator's view to the broadcast; others, meanwhile, wanted pure football. No matter what people thought, Miller brought in the ratings.

The ratings that came along with Miller launched a wave of comedian hirings for other football programs. Soon, Jimmy Kimmel, Nick Bakay, and Jay Mohr were analyzing games on television and the internet. All the criticism, constructive or not, kept coming back to Miller, however. Some said that his jokes are too intelligent for the average football watcher to comprehend. And they're probably right. Britannica.com has taken the liberty of actually analyzing Miller's jokes and making some sense out of them. It's easier said than done. Check out this typical Monday Night Football-Miller joke: "Manning drops back in the pocket and looks for an open man... I don't want to get off in a rant here, but to me, today's high priced players are like J.D. Rockefeller buying off Carnegie and the Buddha for incentives on his '65 Mustang convertible, chaco. I don't know why money is such a big deal, I mean did you ever here of Genghis Khan beating up Brutus Cassius while sharpening his new, shiny f*ckin' Swiss Army knife? Whatever happened to the anti-Seinfeld pragmatists who would rather watch two sumos slap fighting in the Fresh Kills Landfill than Mr. Moneybags count his millions at Park Place? It's a touchdown!"

I don't get it, but Dennis Miller is number 10.
