The Biggest Newsmakers of Y2K

8: The Rock

I'm not a fan of wrestling so you're probably wondering why a wrestler is even on the list. Well, this is the biggest wrestler today and he's largely responsible for the mainstream success of the WWF and other wrestling franchises. In fact, you migh say that the Rock's put a stranglehold on sports-entertainment. Or maybe that he's grappled with the media and won. Actually, nevermind, you can't say any of those things. That would be just stupid.

The Rock's actions off the ring is what's put him on this list. Earlier this year, for example, he released a best-selling book about himself that talked about wrestling and non-wrestling related subjects. He's fast becoming a media favorite in terms of getting easy ratings. The growing popularity of the WWF has allowed the Rock to become the ambassador of the "sport."

The new role has allowed him to appear in numerous television shows, like Access Hollywood and Star Trek: Voyager. He was also a guest host in one of the episodes of Saturday Night Live from last season. On the show, he poked fun at the WWF's "fake" image in his monologue, he played Clark Kent in a hilarious sketch about Superman's identity, among other things.

This year, The Rock also became a political tool. He appeared in both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions this year, probably as a desperate way for the parties to appeal to younger voters and to seem "cool" and "with it" to people in general.

2001 seems to be a bright year for the wrestler: he'll appear in the sequel to The Mummy, a film which he shot earlier in 2000. Also, he continues to be the most popular wrestler in the WWF.
