7: PS2

Picture this: you're standing in a long line in front of Software Etc. with dozens and dozens of people in front of you. It's raining, cold and you're hungry, but luckily you have that reserve ticket the clerk from the store gave you months ago in your clammy hands. You've been waiting for this moment for a year--the release of the most coveted "toy" of the year, the Sony Playstation 2. People would sell their soul, almost, to be in your position. You let your guard down for a minute, however, to wipe the water droplets from your glasses. Suddenly, a strong gust of wind comes from nowhere and blows the wet reserve ticket from your hands. It flutters in the air for a few seconds, then eventually falls through the grates of the water drain. It's gone forever. Now you have to go through the hassle of finding an unsold PS2.

Who knows if that actually happened? But, people have anticipated the PS2's release ever since the system was announced more than a year ago. Sony's current system is, of course, the offspring of the original Playstation, which was amazingly successful. The PS2 takes the system steps further by not limiting itself to just a video game console. Instead, other than playing games and CDs, it also works as a DVD player and an online gaming console.

Though some people got their systems relatively easily with the help of reservations, others weren't so lucky. According to PSM, there were lines twice as long as the available systems at some stores. In some cases, buyers had to camp out in front of stores, or at least get there very early, in order to get a PS2. Some parents even tried to sell sob stories in order to cut in front of the line; needless to say, the plan didn't work. Employees in some stores took advantage of their positions by buying a bunch of systems, only to auction them off in the internet with inflated prices. Some stabbings were even reported just to get in fron of a long line.

The mania the Playstation 2 caused before, during, and after its release is the reason why it's numero 7.
