The Biggest Newsmakers of Y2K

You know he had to be up here somewhere. Not only did Alex Rodriguez have another banner year on the field, he also set a record for the highest salary given to a player in the history of baseball. Let's break it down.

On the field, A-Rod had another MVP type season. Some people have named him the best all-around player in baseball today and I tend to agree with them. Offensively, he finished in the top 10 in 5 American League statistics. Check it out:

• Runs - 134 (2nd)

• Homeruns - 41 (4th)

• Slugging - .606 (5th)

• RBI - 132 (6th)

• Walks - 100 (10th)

He also placed 15th in batting average, hitting .315, and placed 20th in hits with 175. Defensively, he is often overlooked. He had the least amount of errors in the "Holy Trinity" of shortstops (over Nomar and Derek) and continues to dazzle people with great-looking plays. With his offensive and defensive work, he led his team to the American League Championship Series, where they eventually lost to the Yankees.

Despite losing in the ALCS, Rodriguez was still considered as the top free agent this year. In fact, he had been asked about his intentions on returning to Seattle (or not) since spring training. Now, however, he's a very rich Texas Ranger. In early December, A-Rod signed a 10 year $252 million deal. His signature has quickly made Texas a contender again, with the likes of Rafael Palmeiro and Pudge Rodriguez in the line up.
